Hyundai Earns Highest Fuel Economy Gains in Industry Study by EPA

New Hyundai Vehicles

For most of the past decade or two, automotive manufacturers have been primarily concerned with fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness. At the same time, various technological advancements that allowed for improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions without having to make major sacrifices in terms of power. In fact, statistics from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show that the average vehicle is now more fuel efficient and more powerful than ever before. This indicates that all car companies are making huge strides in terms of fuel economy. However, no other company can even begin to compete with the gains made by Hyundai, as the EPA’s most recent 2017 CO2 and Fuel Economy Trends Report shows that Hyundai made the largest gains in fuel efficiency between 2015 and 2016.

Hyundai’s Drive for Improved Fuel Economy

Hyundai has long been dedicated to improving the fuel efficiency of its lineup, and the recent EPA report shows that this effort has produced real, tangible results. Overall, the average fuel economy for all new 2016 vehicles increased by 0.1 miles per gallon from 2015 to an all-time record high of 24.7 mpg. However, the average fuel economy for Hyundai vehicles grew by an impressive 1.3 miles per gallon—far better than any other manufacturer.

The average fuel economy of all 2016 Hyundai vehicles was 28.8 miles per gallon, which is the second-best fuel efficiency rating achieved by any automotive manufacturer. This is quite an impressive achievement, which shows that Hyundai’s commitment to fuel efficiency is really starting to pay off. In fact, the company recently stated that part of the drive behind these recent gains is its commitment to meeting the EPA’s new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards.

In order to continue to meet these standards, the manufacturer also recently announced plans to release an additional 18 new eco-friendly vehicles by the year 2025. In addition, the company will continue to focus on developing key technologies, such as gasoline direct injection, gasoline-electric hybrids, and plug-in hybrids, which have been primarily responsible for the huge fuel economy gains Hyundai has made in recent years.

The fact that the manufacturer performed so well on the most recent EPA fuel efficiency report means that drivers looking to get behind the wheel of a fuel-efficient Hyundai are spoilt for choice. For instance, the 2018 Hyundai Sonata is available in your choice of a standard hybrid or plug-in hybrid that offers even better fuel efficiency.

If fuel efficiency is your primary concern, you should definitely also check out the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq, the world’s first vehicle with three different electric drivetrain choices. Drivers can choose between a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric models. Although the Ioniq EV and Ioniq PHEV are obviously the most eco-friendly, the 2018 Ioniq Hybrid has the distinction of being the most fuel-efficient vehicle without a plug available in the United States—boasting an incredible EPA-estimated 58 miles per gallon.

While the Sonata and Ioniq definitely helped Hyundai to achieve such impressive fuel economy gains, the fact is that all new Hyundai vehicles perform quite well in terms of overall fuel economy.
