Sonata Electric Vehicle

Hyundai developed their first purely electric vehicle in 1991. That was the Sonata Electric Vehicle. Hyundai intended to develop 6 electric vehicles for testing by the end of 1992.

Hyundai produced their first fully electric vehicle for the commercial market, the BlueOn, in 2009 and 2010. This model was a 5-door hatchback car with a top speed of 81 miles per hour and an all-electric range of 87 miles. Hyundai produced a total of 30 vehicles for field testing in South Korea in 2010. They planned to build 2,500 BlueOns by the end of 2012, but it was limited to the South Korean market.

Hyundai has been heavily focused on hybrid vehicles, such as the Avante and the Sonata Hybrid, but they still produce purely electric vehicles. They are currently producing their 2nd generation of electric vehicles with their IONIQ brand. By 2025, Hyundai is hoping to be one of the top three providers of electric vehicles in Europe, with plans to make similar inroads elsewhere in the world.
