The Hyundai Ioniq recently took its first trip to the famed Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, where it set an FIA-approved land speed record. In order to successfully complete the task, the hybrid prototype received a number of modifications to its powertrain, suspension and aerodynamics.

Hitting 157.825 mph, the Ioniq secured its record on the Salt Flats. It achieved a top exit speed of 160.7 mph, which is truly impressive for a car of its kind.

“We couldn’t be more proud in setting the FIA hybrid-category record with our new Ioniq hybrid,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Corporate and Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Our engineering team really pushed the limits to set this new segment benchmark while demonstrating the impressive durability of the entire Ioniq vehicle platform. We expect this will be the first of many accolades for Ioniq.”

The Ioniq prototype that set the record at the Bonneville Salt Flats is a little different from the production model buyers can expect to see at Vandergriff Hyundai in the near future. It featured underbody and air dam aerodynamic modifications, an Ioniq Electric front grille, safety cage, racing seat and safety harness system. Additionally, the car was fitted with a Nitrous Express system, a recalibrated engine and transmission, low-restriction intake and exhaust systems and a Progress Competition col-over suspension. Some components were even removed from the vehicle to reduce weight.
