You'll find many exciting technology offerings from Hyundai, including the Hyundai Digital Key. The Hyundai Digital Key is available starting with the 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The key gives you the convenient option of accessing your vehicle using your smartphone rather than a regular car key. You can also authorize other people to enter your vehicle if you want. The system doesn't take long to set up, but you'll need to take some proper steps first to get started.
Setting Up Your Hyundai Digital Key
To get the most use out of your Hyundai Digital Key, you'll need to have certain software. While you can still use the system with software that's older than the recommended types, you may have more limited use of the system. For starters, the Hyundai Digital Key requires an Android phone. Your phone should have a Version 7.0 operating system or later and at least Bluetooth 4.0. The phone should also have Near Field Communication (NFC).
After ensuring that you have the necessary software, you will need to set up a MyHyundai account if you don't already have one to sign up for the Hyundai Digital Key service. Next, download and install the Hyundai Digital Key app on your phone, which is offered through Google Play. Make sure that you have the Digital Key Smart Card with you.

Pairing Your Phone with Hyundai Digital Key
Pairing your smartphone with Hyundai Digital Key ensures that you can use your phone to start your car, and it ensures that your vehicle knows your smartphone is the main key. To sync your phone:
- Turn on your smartphone to launch the Digital Key app.
- Start your Sonata, then press the "+" button on the Hyundai app to initiate pairing.
- Put your phone on the charger to start pairing automatically. If your vehicle includes navigation, you'll be able to store your phone in the settings for easy device recognition.
Pairing Your NFC Card
The NFC Card that comes with Hyundai Digital Key can act as a backup key for your vehicle if you lose your phone or the battery is dead. Therefore, it's essential to set up the NFC Card with the system, too. To do so:
- Start your car and have your smartphone on hand with the app open.
- Select the option to pair the NFC Card with BLE.
- Place your card on top of the wireless charger to initiate pairing.
