What's New For the 2019 Hyundai Kona?

The Hyundai Kona was introduced in 2018, but the 2019 model brings in some simple upgrades to make the vehicle even better. The biggest change is certain safety equipment being standardized. All the trim levels get lane-departure assistance and warnings, emergency braking, and warnings about collisions. In the original 2018 model, these features were only included on the Ultimate.

Other changes are smaller. There's a new color called Sunset Orange, but the silver and black roof option is retiring. Instead of having a 12-volt power outlet, every trim now has 2 USB charging stations.

If you purchase the SEL Tech Package, you'll get an upgraded sound system and connectivity software. The sunroof, which is usually only available with the Ultimate version, is also a part of the tech package.

2019 Kona Trims and Features

There are four main trims for the Hyundai Kona: SE, SEL, Limited, and Ultimate. The Kona is a subcompact car with a unique exterior style and strong performance.

The SE trim includes a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that operates with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Also available is a 7-inch touchscreen display, along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Bluetooth capabilities and daytime running lights are also standard.

The SEL is an upgraded trim. It has all the features you find in the SE, plus 17-inch alloy wheels and turn signal indicators for your side mirrors. You'll also have heated front seats and a convenient push button start. There are some features you can opt into as well, even if they don't come standard with the SEL.

The Limited trim is the third tier of trims. As such, it comes with all the features you find in the SEL. But the Limited also has an upgraded engine, boasting a turbo charge and 7-speed transmission.

You'll also get LED taillights and headlights, 18-inch wheels, leather surfaces for your seating, and an option for a power sliding sunroof. You also have automatic temperature control, an 8-way adjustable driver seat, and auto-dimming capacities for your rear view mirror. Limited is the way to go if you want additional engine performance.

Ultimate is the highest option. You get more smart technology than you have with the other models, including the BlueLink connected system, high beam assistance, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. In the original 2018 model, this was also the only trim to have a comprehensive suite of safety features. However, for 2019, all models have these features instead.

2019 Hyundai Kona Horsepower

2019 Hyundai KonaAll trims have a combined estimated MPG of 27. The SE and SEL trims have a standard inline 4-cylinder engine, while the Limited and Ultimate upgrade to a turbocharged engine.

The non-turbocharged engine will provide 147 total horsepower, a significant amount for a hybrid vehicle. The turbocharged engine, meanwhile, gives a respectable 175 horsepower and significantly more torque.

Front-wheel drive is standard, but you can upgrade to a 4-wheel drive vehicle if need be. For the SE and SEL, you'll have a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, if you upgrade to the Ultimate or Limited, that changes to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

Hyundai Kona Safety

2019 Hyundai KonaThe Hyundai Kona comes with a standard suite of safety features. There are multiple airbags placed around the vehicle, along with standard pretensioners and child safety locks. When you upgrade to the 4-wheel drive, you have an anti-lock braking system with powerful brakes.

Smart technology helps keep you on track. Lane keeping assistance ensures you don't stray from your lane, rear collision warnings help you back up safely, and the driver attention warning lets you know if there are obstacles in your path.
